The recently-canonized Saint Titus Brandsma says, “True pupils of the School of Carmel find and meet God in the innermost recesses of their souls.” This is Carmelite prayer—a journey to find God in yourself. An interior journey. The fruits of this journey then fuel our ministry, our fraternity, our worship, and our love. As Saint Teresa of Avila says, “The purpose of prayer is the birth always of good works, good works.” Following the 800-year-old Carmelite Rule, the School of Carmel has shaped men and women to be pupils of prayer, and deep self-understanding. Two great figures of the Bible have inspired Carmelites—Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Elijah, the great prophet who lived on Mount Carmel—both deep contemplatives who were deeply active.  This is the Carmelite way.  On your journey, may our Lady of Mount Carmel inspire you, and may the Prophet Elijah guide you. Amen.
