Podcast: What is faith?

FaithWhat is faith? is a question most of us would find difficult to answer.

My podcast today is all about faith and what it means to have faith and to be a person of faith. Merriam-Webster defines faith in four ways. While each definition is a thorough understanding of the word faith, they really are vague descriptions of what faith actually is and how we go about having faith. Believing in Jesus Christ and having completely trust in him is certainly a component of our faith, but it isn't the whole picture.

As Paul wrote to the early Christian Church, "Walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). Scripture tells us that we should, "live by faith, stand by faith, and walk by faith," suggesting that faith is also something we must show or live out. What does this mean for us though?

Well, after thoughtful discernment, I came up with a conclusion (for the most part) about what faith is and how it plays a role in my own life. Faith is a mystery, but it is also preaching the Good News and living it each and every day. It is about betting your life on the unseen realities of Jesus Christ and living out his message every single day.

While on a summer service trip with a group of teenagers, I shared with them this passage from the Letter of James .  "What good it is my brothers and sisters, if someone says they have faith but does not have works? Can that faith save them? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, keep warm and eat well,' but do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also, faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead" (2:14-26).

This passage puts into perspective for us, what faith truly is. Faith is more than this idea of, "All I have to do is say I believe in Jesus and then do anything I want!" Wrong! Faith is believing in Jesus Christ while doing the works Jesus asked us to do: love one another and help the least among us.

Going out and serving those in need is where I find myself closest to Christ. Jesus was the best example of a servant. He sat with the sinners, the poor, the sick, the dying. He comforted those in great need and that is the best example of how I live out my own faith.

By serving others, I know I am serving the Lord. Granted, this may not be exactly how others would describe their faith and that is okay. Some people might define their faith first in terms of their spiritual practices, such as adoring the Blessed Sacrament or saying the rosary everyday, and in fact, all these things make up our own expressions of faith and that is why our Catholic identity is so rich and beautiful. The ultimate goal of our spiritual and corporal works are to draw us closer to Jesus Christ and help to establish God's reign.
